Adobe ColdFusion: Legacy Support and Migration

Lucid Outsourcing Solutions keeps legacy Adobe ColdFusion applications secure and running, then moves them forward: an upgrade to ColdFusion 2023 or 2025, a move to open-source Lucee, a transfer to AWS or Azure, or a full rewrite when that makes more sense. We have built and maintained ColdFusion applications since 2013.

Adobe ends all support for ColdFusion 2021 on November 10, 2026. ColdFusion 2018 and every older version already receive no security updates. Check your version

ColdFusion legacy support and migration, in short

  • Adobe stops all support for ColdFusion 2021 on November 10, 2026. ColdFusion 2018 and earlier already get no security updates.
  • There are three ways forward: upgrade to Adobe ColdFusion 2023 or 2025, move to the free, open-source Lucee engine, or rewrite the application in another language.
  • Make the application safe first. Patch, harden and back up the server before any large change.
  • A migration does not have to mean downtime. The new environment is built next to the live one and traffic moves over in stages.
  • Lucid Outsourcing Solutions has been an official Adobe ColdFusion Partner since January 2020.

Definition

What is ColdFusion legacy support and migration?

ColdFusion legacy support is the work of keeping an older Adobe ColdFusion application secure, stable and maintained: patches, fixes, monitoring and small changes. ColdFusion migration moves that application forward, to a supported Adobe ColdFusion version, to the open-source Lucee engine, to cloud hosting, or to a different language when ColdFusion is no longer the right fit.

Most teams need both. Support keeps the application safe today; migration removes the risk of running software its vendor no longer patches. We usually start with support, because an application has to be stable and understood before it can be moved safely.

ColdFusion end of life

Is your ColdFusion version still supported?

Only ColdFusion 2023 and ColdFusion 2025 have full Adobe support today. ColdFusion 2021 is in its last support phase, which ends on November 10, 2026. ColdFusion 2018, 2016, 11, 10 and 9 are past end of life: they still run, but Adobe no longer fixes security holes in them.

ColdFusion 9 Oct 5, 2009 Dec 31, 2014 Dec 31, 2016 End of life

During core support Adobe ships product updates and fixes and provides technical support. Extended support is the final, narrower phase. Once all support ends, Adobe provides no further updates for that version, including security fixes.

What running an end-of-life ColdFusion version means

  • Security holes found after the end date stay open on your server.
  • PCI DSS requirement 6.3.3 expects critical security patches within one month of release, which becomes impossible once Adobe stops releasing them. [6]
  • It gets harder to run on current versions of Java and the operating system.
  • Fewer developers know older versions well, so every fix takes longer.

Signs your ColdFusion application needs attention

  • It runs ColdFusion 2021 or an older version.
  • Security scans or compliance audits flag the server.
  • Pages are slow, or the server needs regular restarts.
  • Only one person, or nobody, fully understands the code.
  • Database queries are built without cfqueryparam.
  • Changes are copied to the live server by hand, with no staging server or version control.

ColdFusion services

Every Adobe ColdFusion service in one place

Six service areas cover the whole life of a ColdFusion application, from keeping an old system alive to building new features on a current platform.

Legacy Application Support & Maintenance

As an official Adobe ColdFusion Partner, we keep ColdFusion applications running, patched and understood, whether the original developers are still around or long gone.

  • ColdFusion Version Upgrades

Move from ColdFusion 9, 10, 11, 2016, 2018 or 2021 to ColdFusion 2023 or 2025, fixing removed tags and functions on the way.

  • ColdFusion to Lucee Conversion

Switch to the free, open-source Lucee engine to drop Adobe licence fees while keeping your CFML code.

  • ColdFusion Server Maintenance

Apply Adobe updates, keep Java current, lock down the ColdFusion Administrator and watch server health.

  • ColdFusion Application Maintenance & Support

Day-to-day fixes, small changes and help when something breaks in an application already in production.

  • Error Resolution & Debugging

Trace intermittent errors, memory problems and slow requests back to their cause, then fix them for good.

  • Code Housekeeping & Optimization

Remove dead code, parameterize queries, speed up slow database calls and cache what can be cached.

  • Modernization of Legacy CFML

Move tag-based pages to CFScript components, ColdBox MVC and REST APIs, one module at a time.

  • Re-platforming off ColdFusion

When ColdFusion is no longer the right fit, rebuild the application in PHP (Laravel), Node.js, Python or Java with the data moved across intact.

ColdFusion Application Development

New ColdFusion applications and major new features, built on current Adobe ColdFusion or Lucee with frameworks such as ColdBox and ContentBox.

  • Custom Business Applications

Internal tools, client portals and workflows shaped around the way your team actually works.

  • Multi-Site Controlled CMS

Run several websites from one content system, with shared templates and separate editors for each site.

  • Multi-Branded Employee Management Systems

One system serving several brands or locations, each with its own users, roles and branding.

  • Auction & Bidding Platforms

Timed bidding, reserve prices, bidder accounts and payment collection when an auction closes.

  • Event Registration & Management

Online sign-up, attendee lists, payments and confirmation emails managed in one place.

  • Ticketing & Reservation Systems

Seat, room or time-slot booking with availability rules, payments and reminders.

ColdFusion Security & Compliance

Older ColdFusion servers are a common target. We close the gaps, check the code and keep patches current, so an audit or a breach is not how you find out.

  • SSL/TLS Versioning & Encryption

Retire outdated TLS versions, renew certificates and encrypt data in transit and at rest.

  • Code & Database Security Assessments

Review code and queries for SQL injection, cross-site scripting and exposed files, with a prioritized list of fixes.

  • Forensics & Threat Analysis

Investigate a suspected breach: what happened, what was reached, and how to close the way in.

  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Add a second login step for administrators and users without rebuilding the login system.

  • Error Handling & Prevention

Replace raw error pages that reveal server details with safe, logged error handling.

  • Security Patch Implementation

Test and apply Adobe security updates on a schedule, with a rollback plan for each one.

ColdFusion Integrations

Connect your ColdFusion application to the services your business already uses, so data moves between systems without anyone retyping it.

  • Payment Gateways

Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay and other gateways, including recurring billing and refunds.

  • QuickBooks & Tax APIs

Sync invoices, payments and customers with QuickBooks, and calculate sales tax through tax APIs.

  • Shipping & Logistics Systems

Live shipping rates, label printing and tracking from carrier and logistics APIs.

  • Jira for Task & Workflow Management

Create and update Jira issues from your application, or bring Jira data into it.

  • Google & Amazon Web Services

Google APIs plus AWS storage, email and messaging services, connected to your application.

  • Government & Regulatory Integrations

Exchange data and filings with government and regulatory systems through their published interfaces.

ColdFusion Cloud Hosting & Infrastructure

Move ColdFusion off ageing hardware for better scalability and reliability. We work with Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and other leading cloud providers.

  • Migrations & Cloud Transitions

Move servers, databases and files to the cloud in planned stages, with a way back at every step.

  • Development/Staging Server Setup & Configuration

Separate development and staging servers that match production, so every change is tested before it goes live.

  • Hosting & Dedicated Virtual Servers

Right-sized virtual servers or Docker containers for Adobe ColdFusion or Lucee.

  • High Availability & Redundancy

Load-balanced servers and failover, so a single failure does not take the application down.

  • Cloud Storage & Backup Solutions

Automated backups and off-server file storage, with restores tested rather than assumed.

ColdFusion Project & Code Management

Clear plans, version control and automated deployments, so ColdFusion work runs on schedule and every change can be traced.

  • Project Management & Planning

Scoped milestones, regular progress reports and one point of contact from start to finish.

  • Code Repository Management (Git, Bitbucket)

Get legacy code into Git or Bitbucket with branches, code reviews and a full change history.

  • Jira Ticketing & Workflow Automation

Requests, bugs and releases tracked in Jira, with workflows set up to match your team.

  • Continuous Integration & Deployment (CI/CD)

Automated tests and repeatable deployments instead of copying files to the server by hand.

Choosing a path

Upgrade, move to Lucee, or rewrite?

Upgrade Adobe ColdFusion if your application depends on Adobe-only features or you want support from Adobe. Move to Lucee if licence cost is the main problem and your code is mostly standard CFML. Rewrite only when ColdFusion skills are hard to find for your team or the application needs a full redesign anyway.

A free code audit shows which of these paths costs least for your application.
Compare Upgrade Adobe ColdFusionto ColdFusion 2023 or 2025 Migrate to Luceeopen-source CFML engine RewritePHP, Node.js, Python or Java
What changes Same engine, newer version Different engine, same CFML language New language and framework
Licence Paid Adobe licence (Standard or Enterprise) No licence fee Depends on the new stack, usually open source
Code changes Fix removed or changed tags and functions Replace Adobe-only features, fix engine differences The whole application is rebuilt
Effort and risk Lowest Low to moderate Highest
Vendor support Adobe Lucee community and support partners Depends on the new stack
Best when You rely on Adobe-only features or need Adobe support Licence cost is the main pain and the code is standard CFML ColdFusion skills are scarce or the app needs a redesign anyway

How does a ColdFusion support or migration project work?

The same six steps whether you need ongoing support, an upgrade, a Lucee migration or a rewrite.

  1. Free code and server audit

We review your ColdFusion version, Java, operating system, database and code, and list every risk and Adobe-only feature we find.

  2. Written plan and fixed quote

You get the recommended path, a timeline and a fixed quote for the agreed scope, before any work starts.

  3. Make it safe first

We patch the server, lock down the ColdFusion Administrator, set up backups and put the code into version control.

  4. Build alongside production

The new ColdFusion version, Lucee engine or cloud server is set up next to your live system, and the code is converted there.

  5. Test side by side

Automated TestBox tests and page-by-page output comparisons confirm the new system behaves like the old one.

  6. Switch over, then support

Traffic moves to the new system in stages with a rollback ready. Ongoing support and maintenance take over from there.

FAQ

ColdFusion legacy support and migration: common questions

Is Adobe ColdFusion still supported in 2026?

Yes, but only the two newest versions. ColdFusion 2025 has core support until February 26, 2030, and ColdFusion 2023 until May 16, 2028. ColdFusion 2021 is in extended support until November 10, 2026. ColdFusion 2018 and every earlier version are past end of life and receive no security updates from Adobe.

What is the latest version of Adobe ColdFusion?

The latest version is ColdFusion 2025, released on February 25, 2025. Adobe's core support for it runs until February 26, 2030. ColdFusion 2023 is the other fully supported version.

Is ColdFusion still used in 2026?

Yes. Adobe released ColdFusion 2025 in February 2025 and supports it until 2030, and the open-source Lucee engine is still actively developed. Lucid supports ColdFusion applications that clients rely on every day, some of them for more than five years.

What happens when my ColdFusion version reaches end of life?

The application keeps running, but Adobe stops releasing fixes for it. Any security hole found after that date stays open on your server. It also puts you out of step with compliance rules such as PCI DSS, which expects critical security patches within one month of release, and it gets harder to run on current versions of Java and the operating system.

How do I check which ColdFusion version my server is running?

Output the server.coldfusion.productversion variable from any CFML page; Adobe documents it as the ColdFusion version that is currently running. If server.coldfusion.productname returns Lucee, the application runs on the Lucee engine rather than Adobe ColdFusion.

What does ColdFusion legacy support include?

Legacy support covers everything needed to keep an older ColdFusion application safe and working: applying updates, hardening the server, fixing bugs, tracing errors, tuning slow pages, documenting the code and making small changes. It is usually the first step before an upgrade or migration.

Should I upgrade Adobe ColdFusion or migrate to Lucee?

Upgrade Adobe ColdFusion if your application depends on Adobe-only features or you want support from Adobe. Migrate to Lucee if licence cost is your main concern and your code is mostly standard CFML. A short code audit shows how many Adobe-only features you use, which usually settles the decision.

Is Lucee compatible with Adobe ColdFusion code?

Mostly. Lucee runs standard CFML, and its documentation lists the known differences from Adobe ColdFusion, such as some functions and tags that behave differently and Adobe-only features it does not include. A code audit finds those differences before a migration starts.

How long does a ColdFusion upgrade or migration take?

It depends on the size of the code, how many versions you are jumping and how many Adobe-only features need replacing. After a free audit we give you a written plan with a timeline and a fixed quote for the agreed scope, so the schedule is known before work starts.

Will my application go offline during the migration?

No. We build the new environment alongside your live server, test it side by side, then move traffic over in stages with a rollback plan ready. Your users keep working on the current system until the new one has passed testing.

Can you take over a ColdFusion application our previous developer built?

Yes. Inherited ColdFusion applications are common. We start by auditing the code and server, put the code into version control, document how it works, and then take over day-to-day support and fixes.

Can ColdFusion run on AWS, Azure or Docker?

Yes. Both Adobe ColdFusion and Lucee run on cloud servers and in Docker containers, and Adobe publishes official ColdFusion Docker images. We move ColdFusion applications to Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and other providers, with separate development and staging environments.

How much does ColdFusion support cost?

Dedicated ColdFusion developers start at $18 per hour, with a risk-free 14-day trial. Upgrades, Lucee migrations and cloud moves are quoted as fixed-scope projects after a free audit, so you know the cost of the agreed work before it starts.

Can you rewrite our ColdFusion application in another language?

Yes, when it makes sense. We rebuild ColdFusion applications in PHP (Laravel), Node.js, Python or Java and move the data across intact. A rewrite costs more than an upgrade, so the audit compares both options before you decide.

Do you sign an NDA, and who owns the code?

We sign an NDA before we see any code, and you own 100% of the code and intellectual property we produce. Our quality management is certified to ISO 9001:2015.
